Description

Handmade Togolese Musical Heritage
Discover the soulful sounds of Togo with this traditional televi, locally known as “televi” or  “couch cash.” Meticulously crafted by skilled artisans, this lute-style instrument amplifies its warm, resonant tones. The dual nylon strings, tied to a carved wooden neck, are tuned to produce intricate melodies central to Togolese folk music and storytelling traditions.

The televi’s design reflects centuries of cultural heritage, with its ergonomic shape and hand-carved geometric patterns symbolizing community and identity. The strings are anchored using a robust “tied dual” knotting technique, ensuring durability and stable tuning. Ideal for musicians seeking authentic African instruments or collectors valuing ethnographic artistry. Each televi is a functional masterpiece, blending organic materials and ancestral craftsmanship to deliver a sound that bridges past and present.

How to play televi: With a pair in one hand – one gourd being cupped in the palm while the other being free to spin in a similar way to the New Zealand poi – a rhythm is created by the shaking of the beans and when the free gourd creates a ‘clack’ upon impact with the palmed gourd. Rhythms can be varied according to the skill and creativity of the player. You can watch the photos in the gallery.

The gourds are fruits that come from the Swawa tree in West Africa and they are dried, hollowed, filled with small beads and connected with a string.
