This workshop is a unique “learning by doing” experience where we guide you through the full process of repairing or assembling a djembe drum together with you.
Whether you have an old djembe with a broken skin or you simply own the raw materials to assemble a djembe, we will show you how to bring your drum back to life – step by step.
👣 What you’ll learn
➡️ If you’re repairing an old djembe:
- Remove the old ropes and torn skin
- Clean and polish the wooden shell
- Replace the ropes and create knots
- Prepare a new goat skin, weave it around a metal ring
- Mount the new skin on the cleaned shell
- Let it dry naturally
- Tighten the rope (weaving and pulling techniques)
- Tune the drum for a bright, metallic sound
➡️ If you’re assembling a new djembe (starting from a shell and from the scratch):
- Rope knotting and structure building
- Prepare and install the goat skin
- Weave and tighten the rope
- Tune the drum for optimal sound
⏱️ Duration:
Around 5 hours total, completed within one dry day. The drum is ready by the next day.
